Here is a video tip from the popular cooking show America's Test Kitchen where you take a number of bread slices, place them on a half sheet pan, and then place them 4 in away from your broiler. You do this so you can "map" the hot spots of your broiler as most ovens don't necessarily heat evenly.
It's a great tip, and once you know where your hot spots are you can either avoid them or use them to your advantage!
